US expected to push Asia to shoulder more security burden

(SINGAPORE) Faced with the continuing decline of the US dollar, the United States can no longer afford to maintain its global military presence at current levels and will probably require Asian and other host countries to shoulder more of the financial burden of providing security, a former senior official of several US administrations said in Singapore yesterday.

Clyde Prestowitz, now president of the Washington-based Economic Strategy Institute, also predicted the US could impose tariffs on imports and take action against China as a currency 'manipulator' unless it secures better 'offsets' in return for its own economic openness.
